Preserving Our Audiovisual Heritage: Film and Video Collections

Trainers: Mona Jimenez and Kara Van Malssen of New York University, Ishumael Zinyengere of the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal For Rwanda, and Mick Newnham of the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia.

Description:
The attendees will learn the basics of how to set up archival practices in their organizations, and how save the films and videos in their collections so that they can be made accessible and used. The focus will be on how to identify the films and videos in the collection and to assess their condition so that preservation can be planned and undertaken. The attendees will learn the basics of cataloging, the current approaches to preservation, and ways improve the storage of materials to help prevent further deterioration.

With the support of the Department of Cinema Studies, the Moving Image Archiving and Preservation Program and the Tisch School of the Arts of New York University, and The Rockefeller Archive Center in cooperation with the Association of Moving Image Archivists.

Panel discussion: "Digital Archiving and Cultural Advocacy" (part II)

After a very successful panel discussion last year about the history of filmmaking in Ghana from its inception in 1948, shedding light on the production environment through the mid-1990s and the works made pre- and post-independence, Mona Jimenez will discuss her observations about the state of audiovisual archives in Accra, the urgency in taking action, and the potential to save both historical films and videos and new digital works.
We will continue to explore this vast subject with a presentation of the situation of archiving and preservation in other countries.
